European Literature Days

The European Literature Days open windows on trends in contemporary European literature and promote cross-language literary exchange in the literary marketplace, as well as acting as a central hub for cultural transfer in Europe.

On an October weekend, experts and interested guests meet up in Wachau to test their literary knowledge in a unique ambiance. Writers, academics, journalists, literary agents and cultural representatives discuss current literary ‘hot topics’, engaging in intensive and frank debate about the diversity and variety of European culture. This literary ‘class test’ offers inspirational results and ideas for future European literary and cultural initiatives.

The international dialogue takes place in the context of conversational events, talks and forum sessions. As a wine location well known for its hospitality, Spitz an der Donau is the ideal setting for participants to get to know each other and to plan new networks and projects.

In the fringe programme, the European Literature Days put the spotlight on the literary agenda in Lower Austria. European literature is presented to an engaged audience. Visits to local schools and other venues are to spread the word about literature. The book series "Draußen in der Wachau" or "Out and About in Wachau" and various activities to promote reading make this a relevant and forward-thinking event in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Wachau.
